Camden Opera House Summer News

The Camden Opera House has made some improvements and expanded a few services this summer.  First, and most visible, probably, are the flower-filled planters by our front entrance.  As most projects are at the Opera House, this was a group effort!  Our thanks to Rene Hutcheon for help researching and planning the project,  Leslie Curtis Designs ( for her assistance selecting the planters, and Kath Holland ( and the entire Camden Garden Club for planting and arranging care for them.   We hope they help showcase our entrance and enhance our already beautiful building.

Summer programming includes concerts including Mary Chapin Carpenter, the Luiz Caracol Trio from Portugal, Grammy winner Suzy Bogguss and two newcomers making headlines – Andre Lascoutx and Elijah Ocean.  Also family fun shows on the fourth Thursday of July and August – July 23rd features International Clown Bob Berkey and August 27th the beloved Avner the Eccentric will return.    Films include the continuation of CIFF Selects (a documentary series partnership between the Camden International Film Festival, the Camden Opera House and Sundance Docs) one Wednesday per month, and the return (now an annual tradition) of a free community screening of A Seal Called Andre, about one of the most famous Rockport residents of all time!  For more information on any of the above, please see the Opera House website: For show tickets call (207) 470-7066, go online or come to the Town office Monday – Friday between 9 am and 3 pm.

Information on all of these events can be obtained on our expanded telephone events line, initiated by Liz Knauer, Opera House Assistant.   The info line gives you an insiders’ low down on every event.    To reach it, call the main office phone at 236-7963 and select Option 1.

We have improved and expanded our Opera House Tours this summer.  Send your summer visitors to us – Fridays from June 26 – September 11th.  You can just attend the Opera House portion at 4:45 PM or take the entire tour of downtown starting at the Camden Library at 4 PM.

Included in the Opera House portion will be an historic slideshow and a guided walk through our beautifully restored auditorium.  The historic slideshow was lovingly crafted by Chris Glass, an architect in Maine for forty years and former member and chairman of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.    Libby Schrum will conduct the Opera House portion of the tours.  Libby is a furniture designer ( and Camden resident who gave tours at Southwestern University while attending and loves the history and beauty of the opera house.  Opera House Committee member Beth O’Connor helped pull this year’s tours together.
